When alumnus Marlow Guttmann graduated from the master's degree programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2023 he had his eyes set on a career in consulting in Hamburg. In our interview, you will learn about Marlow's journey of landing his first job after graduation, the impact of the Leapfrog scholarship and the rewarding experience of working on a sustainable mobility project.

Hi Marlow! You graduated from LUSEM in 2023 with a MSc degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Can you tell us a bit more about the road to landing your first job after graduation?

I started looking for jobs already in January 2023 while I was still in Sweden. Fortunately, many companies were offering online interviews and assessments, which was perfect for me since I was focusing my job search on Hamburg, Germany—a city I had always wanted to move to. With my diverse background as a Business Lawyer and a graduate in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, I believed that a job as a consultant would be a great way to kickstart my career, allowing me to discover more about my strengths and interests.

Pursuing a master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation was the perfect way to combine high-quality education with the freedom to innovate and create something new.

After going through multiple assessment centre rounds, case studies, and personal fit interviews, I received several job offers. I chose the one that felt like the best fit for me and aligned with my values. That’s how I ended up at the boutique consulting firm civity Management Consultants, part of Rambøll Management Consulting, which is one of the leading consultancies in the field of sustainability.

You currently work as a consultant in Hamburg, Germany, can you share with us what a day in your life can look like?

As a Management Consultant, my daily life is dynamic. I am usually working on multiple projects simultaneously, engaging with a diverse array of stakeholders and organisations, including political institutions, municipalities, and corporations. My primary role involves advising clients on various challenges they face, from optimising business models to developing strategies and concepts that revitalise their profitability.

A typical day for me is a mix of internal team meetings, client calls, and focused solo work. Internal meetings are crucial for aligning our team’s efforts and strategising our approach. Client calls are equally vital, where we discuss project milestones, upcoming tasks, and any pressing issues. Consulting is fundamentally a people’s business, so these interactions are not just about ticking off boxes; it’s also about building rapport, understanding the unique needs of each client, and fostering a collaborative environment that drives successful outcomes.

In my dedicated focus time, I dive deep into research, data analysis, and problem-solving, which can be quite challenging at times. However, it's this very challenge that makes the job as a consultant so interesting and rewarding. Right now, I’m deeply involved in an exciting project with a transport company. We’re working on developing a sustainable mobility concept that ensures future economic viability. This project isn't just about crunching numbers and creating business cases; it also integrates law-related strategies, which is particularly exciting for me given my background as a business lawyer. I'm fortunate to work with an incredible team, including an international law firm, data analysts, and mobility experts. This diverse group keeps the work engaging and constantly challenges me, providing a steep learning curve.

During your bachelor’s studies, you studied Law, HR-management and psychology, what motivated you to go for a master’s programme in Entreneurship and Innovation?

My background in Law provided a solid foundation, but I always felt a strong desire to explore new horizons. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of starting my own business and immersing myself in the startup ecosystem. Pursuing a master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation was the perfect way to combine high-quality education with the freedom to innovate and create something new.

The focus on entrepreneurship allowed me to learn more about a completely different side of business. It was all about embracing an entrepreneurial mindset—fostering creativity, building resilience, and sharpening strategic thinking.

This programme was a real game-changer for me. Unlike my previous studies, which I thoroughly enjoyed, the focus on entrepreneurship allowed me to learn more about a completely different side of business. It was all about embracing an entrepreneurial mindset—fostering creativity, building resilience, and sharpening strategic thinking. I loved the hands-on approach and the chance to work on real projects. It was an incredible opportunity to gain new skills and broaden my perspective, preparing me for the fast-paced world we are living in today.

How has your studies at the programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation influenced your life?

Through this program, I learned to identify opportunities and develop innovative solutions, essential skills that I apply daily in my consulting work, entrepreneurial ventures, and writing for leading business and HR magazines. Receiving the Leapfrog scholarship was a significant milestone, validating my dedication and hard work. My involvement in Spark Lund, where we assisted students in transforming their business ideas into reality, was an incredibly rewarding experience. The diverse international community at Lund, along with its supportive ecosystem and extensive network, played a crucial role in my growth. Overall, the program equipped me with deep insights into innovation, leadership, and the power of collaboration, all of which continue to drive my professional and personal journey.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I see myself continue doing work that’s truly meaningful and impactful. I’m not so much focused on landing a specific job title. Instead, I’m driven by the difference I can make. My goal is to keep learning, improving, and sharing what I know with others. I want to continue asking questions, being open-minded, and being surrounded by people I can learn from.
I want to be involved in projects that have a positive impact, whether that's through my consulting work, my own business, or contributing to community initiatives.

Ultimately, I aspire to do work that matters and help others succeed. I believe in continuous improvement and embracing challenges. No matter where my path leads, I want to look back and see the positive changes I’ve made in both my professional and personal life.

I’m excited to see what the next few years will bring!
